Neal Stephenson

The author who coined the term “Metaverse”, Neal Stephenson, is working on a new blockchain called LAMINA1, working alongside the former head of the Bitcoin Foundation Peter Vessenes. However, unlike other metaverse projects, LAMINA1 will focus on 2D experiences as opposed to 3D worlds.

In a Nutshell:

  • Stephenson first coined the term in the 1992 novel Snow Crash.
  • Stephenson and Vessenes said that the LAMINA1 blockchain would “form the foundation layer for the Open Metaverse”.
  • Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin has backed the effort.

What it Means:

  • The metaverse has come full circle with Stephenson’s launch of a metaverse blockchain, and it should be interesting to see how its development unfolds. The fact that it is focused on being as open as possible with benefits focusing on consumers should resonate strongly with gamers.
